Spring Hip Hop Releases

In an effort to support the artists that I appreciate, I will be dedicating this post to promote some new hip hop album releases. The best way to support is buying through itunes--digital music is much more environmentally friendly AND the artist gets more money per sale!

SAIGON & STATIK SELEKTAH - ALL IN A DAY'S WORK

Recorded in a span of 24 hours and promptly put up on itunes with no promotional budget or marketing plan, this album is a new approach to releasing music. Based on the strength of Saigon's dopeness as an emcee, this album has been killin the itunes hip hop charts. This 10 song album is just an appetizer which is just a preview of what to expect in the near future--Saigon is currently working on another mixtape which will be the pre-cursor to his long awaited full length project with Just Blaze.

Check out a recent Saigon Interview with DJ Booth here.

NATE KING COLE - RE: GENERATIONS

MF DOOM - BORN LIKE THIS

Every rap-nerd's favorite masked MC is back with a new release after a long hiatus.

Once upon a time in '94...

Originally released in March 1994, this 90's cult classic revolves around an inner city high school basketball star and the challenges he faces in the mean streets of New York. Like a darker version of 'White Men Can't Jump' this urban drama focuses on basketball, which symbolizes the dreams and aspirations of many ghetto kids in America today.

Watch the movie on youtube: HERE.

Download the album: HERE.

This soundtrack is so much more than a compilation of hit singles. With the whole project overseen by Dr. Dre, it was a landmark album that put the westcoast 'G-funk' sound at the forefront of the music industry. The album sold over two million copies and won the Soundtrack of the Year award at the 1995 Source Awards,

Unfortunately, the CD version of the sountrack was missing two of 2Pac's songs which were prominently played in the movie (Pain and Loyal to the Game). However, the missing songs were included in the cassette tape verson of the soundtrack and the CD single for Regulate.

Some notable hit songs from this album:

"Anything" by SWV

Warren G performing "Regulate" live in Vancouver (@ The Commodore, June 2008)

"Pour Out a Little Liquor" by Thug Life

"Afro Puffs" by Lady of Rage

My Favorite Diss Tracks

For my 1st post, I figured I should come up with something I made myself rather than stealing an existing post from another blog. So I threw together this youtube playlist of my favorite diss records of all time! I was too lazy to organize them in any particular order, and I'm sure I missed a bunch that deserve to be on there.

That being said, here's my top 5 list of the best ever hip hop diss records:

#5) 2Pac featuring The Outlawz: Hit Em Up

#4) Ice Cube: No Vaseline

#3) Canibus: 2nd Round KO

#2) Common Sense: The Bitch In Yoo

#1) Boogie Down Productions: The Bridge Is Over
